New York Fashion Week: Oscar de la Renta Spring 2012

Oscar de la Renta’s Spring 2012 collection is a study in exuberance, color, texture and expert tailoring. Things were definitely different this season, with a young hip set sitting front row (from Nicki Minaj to Justin Timberlake), as well as an infectious buoyant mood which demonstrated that Monsieur de la Renta knows how to make fun fashion, that still looks chic.

The collection started off with larger than life silk taffeta gowns in eye-popping colors including cherry red and mustard, on Liu Wen and Emily Baker. Youth shined through in the cropped lace blouses that were layered over the gowns: totally on-trend with fashion right now and quite frankly, a little ode to the 80’s. The brights continued with lime green cropped trousers on Jourdan Dunn, Nyasha Matonhodze’s feather tank and sheer pleated harem pants in the same shade, an adorable yellow sundress on Josephine Skriver, Frida Gustavsson’s red carpet-worthy cocktail dress in red with a cinched waist,  another red carpet stunner in lime on Jac and a gown fit for a medieval princess on Elsa Hosk.

Oscar’s regular “ladies who lunch” set had nothing to worry about as his classic silhouettes were still shown including knee-length embroidered shift dresses on Lais Ribeiro and Liu Wen, a tweed ensemble on Nyasha Matonhodze resembling the sweetest of confections, Magdalena Frackowiak’s cropped cardigan and high-waisted trousers and a luxurious cropped fur on Hailey Clauson (to be worn before the weather warms up).

Anna Wintour, Jennifer Garner, Jessica Chastain and Leighton Meester’s Gossip Girl character, Blair Waldorf, are all fans of Oscar de la Renta so I cannot wait to see how they rock these Spring 2012 looks in the coming months.
