Giambattista Valli dresses celebrities, “It” girls and women with a taste of luxury in every part of the globe. He used the locales and travel destinations of his customers as inspiration for his Spring 2012 collection. These influences were clear in sheepskin fur vests and coats channeling the mountains of Asia, animal prints that were obviously safari-inspired, snakeskin shoes which were an ode to exotics and chunky chain links on footwear which could be traced back to American decadence and glamour. Now that Monsieur Valli is a couture designer, that expert tailoring and sensibility drips from each one of his looks, truly making his ready to wear a step above the rest.
Each season, great boxy sheath dresses are shown and this collection was no exception. Though they aren’t ideal for women with curves, I find that buying them a size up and then altering them does the trick, or you can wear them loose. Belting the dresses is also an option. A signature of Giambattista’s is to add a feathered skirt or some whimsical detail that really makes his collections so alluring, while also giving you original unique pieces in your wardrobe that cannot be compared to anything else.
Monsieur Valli is clearly a dress man, but I really loved the pant options he showed on the runway including a zebra print cropped pair on Kate King (shown above), a pink floral brocade pair on Hanaa Ben Abdesslem and Zuzanna Bijoch’s yellow cropped brocade style that looked killer when paired with the chain link sandals. He is a designer that makes clothing that can be worn by all women regardless of their ages. For instance, the three-quarter sleeve brocade coats he showed are perfect for “ladies who lunch” but would also look amazing with skinnies and outrageous sky-high heels, great for the young fashionable set.
Bianca Brandolini d’Adda and Zoe Saldana are fans and I cannot wait to see how they try out Giambattista Valli’s sweet travel-inspired looks in the coming months.
