Luxury handbags are some of the biggest investments that a woman makes in her lifetime. Some handbags cost just as much as rent for an apartment, a mortgage, or even add up to the cost of a new car.
The Hermes Birkin is one of the most well-known and most popular handbag styles in the world. It is also one of the most expensive, going for thousands of dollars, at minimum.
If you aren’t already familiar, Moda Operandi is an online luxury fashion retailer which specializes in the pre-order of just debuted runway collections. The site kicked off Vintage Week with a slew of vintage Hermes styles including the Birkin and Kelly in a variety of different exotic skins and colors. Naturally, my favorite styles were of the exotic variety including the Himalaya Crocodile Birkin, Brighton Blue Crocodile Birkin and the Vert Anis Crocodile Birkin. All stunning pieces that are true show stoppers, both for their craftsmanship and price.
The Himalaya for example costs a whopping $79,900. Definitely not for the faint of heart nor wallet. I am not sure if I will see a $80K handbag in my closet during my entire lifetime, which in all honesty, I am totally fine with. That amount of money could be put towards a house, several cars, vacations and much more. Most shoppers do not have that kind of money to dish out on an accessory, though Moda Operandi is of course catering to clientele that don’t squirm at the site of four zeros or more in a price tag.
On the flip side, it is Hermes. Most will not own the brand in any capacity in their lifetime, but if you do, you are truly investing in quality and heritage. If you are lucky enough to get your hands on a piece, be it vintage or new, you will have truly added a timeless accessory to your collection that you can pass down through generations. A Birkin is classic and functional, so you will not have to worry about buying a handbag that you will wear sparingly. The crocodile skin of the Himalaya and other styles makes them even more rare and thus much more expensive.
Here is what Moda Operandi Co-Founder and CEO Áslaug Magnúsdóttir has to say about the Birkin bag: “Perhaps there is no vintage piece more storied – or coveted – than a Birkin…..The definition of perpetual glamour, the Birkin bag is the perfect accessory for any, and every occasion.”
I totally intend on owning a Birkin in my lifetime and I look forward to the day when I own a multitude of other amazing, one-of-a-kind luxury pieces to go along with it. It might not cost $80K, but it will be a piece that I cherish for sure.
Moda Operandi’s Vintage Hermes sale ends on August 22nd. Visit www.modaoperandi.com to request membership and purchase.
