I heard about Misty Copeland long before I ever saw her in action. As an avid fan of the ballet, I always long to see dancers of color, but it is a rare occurrence, unless I am attending the likes of Alvin Ailey. Imagine my happiness when Misty came along, making history as the third African American female soloist at the American Ballet Theatre. The first in two decades might I add.
Though I haven’t seen Misty in a ballet just yet, I was able to catch some of her dancing when I attended the Prince concert last year. Prince is always a champion of incredibly talented young women of color making strides in their respective fields, thus he included her in his performance of “The Beautiful Ones”. It was absolutely breathtaking.
In the September 2011 issue, Essence featured Misty in its “On Point” spread. For one of her looks, she is wearing a stunning dress from Oscar de la Renta’s Fall 2011 collection: the Empire Strapless dress, crafted from silk organza with a twisted ruffle empire skirt. With her elegant updo and cherry red lip, it is a fashion match made in heaven.
I hope that I get to see Misty Copeland in a ballet soon, but I would love to see her in more fashion editorials. The best models are dancers after all.
Oscar de la Renta’s Empire Strapless Dress retails for $7990. Visit www.oscardelarenta.com to purchase. See Misty’s dress on the runway below, worn by Katsia Zingarevich, as well as some more images of Misty.
