Though born in New York City with loads of style, Autumn Adeigbo is a Nigerian girl at heart, being born to an Ibo mother and Yoruba father from Lagos. Her mother made her dresses when she was a young girl, instilling in her a love of fashion and design, as well as a predilection for leopard print.
Autumn was definitely a rebel, being expelled from boarding school in 10th grade. Somehow she tamed her wild side and ended up attending Spelman College, where she studied economics. She then went on to Parsons School of Design, where she honed her fashion skills like some of the world’s most famous designers. Autumn went on to work as a stylist for four years and even as a fashion assistant at W, which we all know is one of the most coveted positions in the industry. In the end, she decided to stay true to herself and do things her way with her own fashion line.
“For the quirky sophisticate who thinks with her heart. For the discoverer who desires to be the bright spot of everyplace she roams. Culture Color Conscience.”
Autumn’s Fall 2011 collection is wonderfully titled “6 Nights with Jean-Michel”, referencing Basquiat. His influence can be seen in the vivid prints used in each piece. Here is what Autumn had to say about the name and what influenced her for Fall: “My latest collection—titled “6 Nights with Jean-Michel” [is] inspired by my protagonist’s six-night affair with artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. The collection incorporates my usual African influences and prints, and of course 5% of each sale is donated to healing sexual violence crisis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo- via Women for Women International. Examples of Basquiat’s work (my favorite artist) are referenced in some of the shots. The Location is the beautiful The Lion restaurant.” (MIMI Magazine)
