Gareth Pugh for MAC Cosmetics And A Look At His Fall 2011 Collection

MAC is currently on a roll with their collaborations. They have just released news of the Bloggers’ Obsessions collection which features nine beauty bloggers who got the chance to create eye shadows and lipglasses. Now, they have tapped Gareth Pugh for a collection set to launch worldwide in November.

The two first collaborated for Pugh’s Spring 2010 show in which the models were given a gray complexion (in true Pugh style) courtesy of MAC’s Pro Micronized Airbrush Foundation, mixing black and white shades. MAC wants to recreate that genius for a collection of products and accessories that will feature unique packaging. I am going to take a wild guess and say that Pugh will somehow put a spin on the brand’s black and white color palette as he is so fond of the two hues himself. Style.com has reported that a fête will happen next month to celebrate the collaboration, surely with tons of celebrities, models and editors in attendance. The products will also be used at Pugh’s Spring 2012 fashion show at Paris Fashion Week in October. Goth at its finest and I cannot wait to see the results.

When it comes to fashion that is dark and mystical, no one does it better than Gareth Pugh. It takes a certain kind of woman to wear his pieces: wealthy to afford them, confident to pull them off and fashion-minded for sure because he isn’t the mainstream, run of the mill designer. You probably won’t find Zara and H&M trying to recreate his collections because they’re not for the faint of heart or the mass consumer who isn’t design-focused.

For Fall, it was all about his signature strong shapes which were shown as exaggerated hips on a dress worn by Constance Jablonski, strong shouldered leather-accented jackets on Roberta Narciso, Joan Smalls and Fei Fei Sun and an eye-catching gold sparkling cape on Karlie Kloss. Black was one of the most popularly used shades (as is Pugh’s nature), but he created some diversity with strong cobalt blues and striking golds, showing that he is much more than a designer who embraces the dark future. The gold armor pieces were some of my favorites and I cannot wait to see how some crazy editor or maybe a Gaga or Beyoncé pulls them off in the months to come.

Not everything was strong and rigid in the collection which was a nice surprise. There was a great deal of movement shown in the designs including draped collars on jackets, flowy wide-leg pants and billowy dresses. Pugh can do soft and feminine which might shock some, truly showing his range.
