One word for Rick Owens’ Spring 2012 collection? Masterful. He has long been one of my favorite designers, but with each season, his pieces are becoming more and more beautiful as well as functional.
An ethereal quality could be felt in the designs, even though the palette of the collection dabbled in more than just white: black, grey and mahogany were also shown. Rick Owens usually does androgyny so well, but his pieces for Spring really possessed this overwhelming femininity and power, while still maintaining a clean and pure nature. After seeing a white cut-out gown on Prabal Gurung’s Spring 2012 runway, I was quite sure that I had officially changed my future wedding dress designer from Giambattista Valli to Mr. Gurung, but a cap-sleeve long white gown on Rick Owens’ runway has me thinking that he will be a really strong, yet unexpected candidate for wedding dresses after this collection. So many of his dresses were so beautiful that I truly would not be surprised if I saw them on the red carpet.
There was an astounding feeling of elegance and sophistication in the collection, which moved so far past the downtown chic vibe that Rick Owens is usually known for. Even in black leather, the designs echoed grace and luxury: Saskia de Brauw’s long gown, Kinga Rajzak’s short sleeve zip-front jacket, a cropped three-quarter sleeve jacket on Liu Xu. No short hemlines were present and that did not take away from the sensuality of the looks in the slightest. Long form-fitting skirts were the mainstay silhouette of the collection and completely echoed ease and femininity.
Another of my favorite dresses from the collection was a mahogany high-collar dress with a gathered front and loose-fitting silhouette. For some reason, I imagined Beyoncé in full maternity mode rocking this look.
Not to forget were the shoes: from space age sky-high wedges in silver to Rick Owens’ signature knee-high wedge boots in the sweetest mahogany. Definitely must-have footwear for the season that will get you snapped on the streets, while still keeping you comfortable.
